When Should you Consult a Doctor?

Is it Time to Consult a Doctor? Cancer and other diseases can usually be cured when discovered at an earlier stage. This is why knowing when to seek medical care matters a lot. So when you notice some changes or anything painful in your body, do not ever ignore them. They may be more than what you think.

Here are the top eight signs and symptoms that tell you to consult a doctor as soon as possible.

1. Shortness of breath

Shortness of breath is caused by extreme temperatures, very strenuous workout routines, or obesity. Outside of these situations, if you experience severe shortness of breath suddenly, it can be a sign of an underlying health problem. Some of the causes for shortness of breath include bronchitis, asthma, pneumonia, or other heart and lung problems so it’s important to seek medical attention right away.

2. Unexplained weight loss

Losing weight without really doing anything may be a good thing for some. However, it can also signal a health problem. Consult your doctor if you experience an unexplained drop in weight (10 to 20-pound weight loss in just one month or less) as this could be a sign that you have any of the following cases: liver disease, diabetes, depression, cancer, or an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism).

3. Persistent or high fever

If your fever keeps coming back, it can mean infection that needs to be addressed before it gets worse. It can be a urinary tract infection or tuberculosis. In some cases, it can be the “Big C” so don’t risk it by ignoring this sign.

4. Headache

Most of us have experienced headache from time to time. Those who suffer from migraine very well know that headaches were not created equally. With this in mind, consult your doctor immediately if your headache is either the worst you’ve experienced in your entire life or if it is accompanied by fever, stiff neck, or back pain. These are signs of aneurysm or meningitis.

5. Bleeding

If you experience bleeding when you cough, vomit, urinate or defecate, these signs could be something benign. It is totally abnormal and absolutely merits attention. Get checked by your doctor as soon as possible.

6. Confusion or personality changes

If you have suddenly experienced difficulty in focusing, sustaining, or shifting attention, poor thinking skills, or any personality changes, get checked immediately. You may have infection, poor nutrition, or mental health conditions that needs to be addressed.

7. Unexplained changes in bowel habits

If you notice that your stool is bloody or black, and you experience constipation or diarrhea persistently, your doctor would want to know. These changes in your bowel habits could mean bacterial infection, a viral or parasitic infection, or  worse, colon cancer.

8. Flashes of light

If you see bright spots or flashes of lights, you may have migraine. In other cases, it could mean retinal detachment, making it a must for you to seek Immediate medical care to prevent permanent loss of vision.

Most people have an idea about when they should consult a doctor. However, some signals are more subtle, making some ignore them. Don’t be that person. Remember, prevention of disease is always better than treatment. Take control by taking steps to keep your body at its optimum performance. Commit to an active and healthy lifestyle and have yourself checked by your doctor if you experience any of the signs and symptoms outlined above.
